After announcing a crackdown from October 1 on new vehicles not having high security numberplates, traffic police officers on Thursday said they would take up the delay in issuing these numberplates with the Transport department.

The traffic police and the Transport department were to conduct the drive against cars flouting the government order to put high security numberplates.

But the announcement of the crackdown sent shockwaves as car buyers protested against the move, saying the dealers have not issued the numberplates within the "mandatory" six days after purchase.

The rules stipulate that all newly purchased vehicles will be fined for violating registration certificate norms if these were found without high security numberplates.

"We have received complaints from car buyers that the numberplates are not being issued to them on time. The Transport department claims that the procedure to issue the numberplates is completed in three days, but people do not come to collect them. They only have to pay Rs 214 for these numberplates," a traffic officer said.

"If there is indeed a delay from the Transport department's side and if more such complaints pour in, we will take up the matter with the Transport officials," he said.

U R Kapoor, managing director of Rosmerta HSRP Ventures Ltd, the company making the numberplates, said the car dealer has to send the documents to the regional transport officer (RTO) after a purchase is made. But a car dealer avoids going to the RTO if he sells only two to three cars per day, he said.

"The dealers often wait until they sell at least eight to 10 cars before going to the RTO to submit the papers for the numberplates. A plate is issued only after the papers are verified. In many cases, the documents are incomplete and have to be referred back. This delays the process. Once the documents are complete, it takes only three days for us to issue the numberplate," Kapoor said.
