More students, less pre-primary schools: Govt

Despite a 50 per cent increase in the number of pre-primary students in the national capital over the past five years, the number of schools have remained the same.

Figures from the Delhi Statistical Handbook, 2012, show that the number of students in each pre-primary school has increased from 1,919 in 2006 to 2,972 this year.

Data shows that a similar situation exists in primary schools as well.

Between 2006-07 and 2008-09, data show that 51 pre-primary schools existed in Delhi in 2011. This number has dropped to 50.

So while in 2006, 51 schools serviced 97,905 students, the same number of schools now play host to 1,48,601 students.

A senior Education department official said, perhaps, a lot of unrecognised pre-primary schools in Delhi were not accounted for. Incidentally, pre-primary school teachers decreased from 1,448 in 2007 to just 188 in 2011.

A similar situation prevails in primary schools for students between Class I and Class V. While in 2006-2007, there were 2,595 primary schools that number dropped to 2,563 in 2011, while the number of students increased by 56,563.

The handbook also points to an increase in the number of phones in the city.

Delhi's populace seems to favour mobile phones, with the number of users in the Capital increasing to 4.25 crore from last year's 3.88 crore connections.

While the total number of wireless phones increased to 4,25,89,287 in 2012 from 3,88,21,604 in 2011, landline telephones also showed an increase of 74,199 in one year.

According to the statistical handbook, Delhi's population in 2011 was recorded at 1,67,53,2356, which means an average of 2.5 phones per person.
