Sanskriti loves dancing and it doesn’t matter that she suffers from Down’s Syndrome. On Tuesday at Tagore theatre,Sanskriti performed to a packed crowd, her salsa moves enthralling an audience that asked for an encore. It was among the many highlights of the finale of choreographer Tanushree Rakshit’s Flames dance workshop 2010. The team from Flames had trained children from Snehalaya,Piya Sharma Charity Trust,Missionaries of Charity and Don Bosco Navjeevan Society.

Flames teaches freestyle, contemporary, salsa and hip-hop among other forms and students, from kindergarten to senior secondary, were among the performers. The initiative to teach at NGOs was part of the school’s plan to spread dance among the underprivileged. They danced to various Bollywood numbers like Bum bum bole ,All izz well apart from some western beats. “It was entertaining to see children performing despite technical faults,” says Vanita Arora, who was among the audience.

“It took Sanskriti a while to get the right step, but her conviction and dedication helped her,” said Deepak, her trainer. Sanskriti’s mother,Vibha Aggarwal, beaming with pride, said,“Today is a great day for us.”

Rakshit, credited with making Mika dance to her steps in Jhalak Dikhla Ja- 2 said,“Though I have learnt classical dance,we focused on western forms as these are easier to learn.” Her Latin and Ballroom dance brought the audience to its feet. She is planning to start regular classes in Chandigarh soon. Coming up,however,is a winter workshop in December.
