In what could probably be the first conviction under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, a 22-year-old youth, Jitendra, was convicted and sentenced to 14 years in jail after a quick trial in Khandwa, MP.
Jitendra, a labourer, had sexually assaulted an 18-month-old child on November 23, 2012. Apparently, the victim was playing with her brother when the labourer took her away. The villagers thrashed him before handing him over to the police.
The accused was booked under Section 5 (Aggravated Penetrative Sexual Assault) that provides for a minimum term of 10 years, which may extend to imprisonment of life. Besides the rigorous imprisonment, the accused was also fined Rs 5,000. A total of 14 witnesses were examined during the trial.
The district and sessions judge heard the case for four days between January 21 and 24 and examined the accused on Monday.
