  • In the wake of the spate of terrorist attacks last year, M S University (MSU) authorities have asked all the deans of 13 faculties to seek domicile proof from students seeking admission in the new academic session. The students have been asked to submit domicile proof in the form of electricity bill, driving license, PAN card and details of their guardians.

According to the university authorities, this step was taken after police investigations showed that students were frequently giving false residential addresses. According to the university annual report, more than 31,000 students are enrolled here every year. The Arts faculty, which enrolled 5,185 students in the 2008-09 academic year, is spearheading the domicile proof campaign on the campus.

MSU Vice-Chancellor Prof Ramesh Goyal said, “After the security problem last year, I had instructed all the deans to seek domicile proof from the students. While there are some practical problems, we will solve them soon. We want to keep a record of addresses of students enrolled in every faculty. We also aim to give a bar code number to them in the next few years.”

MSU Pro Vice Chancellor S M Joshi also reiterated the same thing, “We would like to concentrate on those faculties, which have the maximum number of students from other states and countries, i.e. the Arts Faculty and Fine Arts faculty.”

Prof Nitin Vyas, Dean, Faculty of Arts said they were now insisting on the students submitting school leaving certificate, copies of electricity bill, telephone bill, property tax bill, passport, ration card and provisional eligibility certificate along with the marksheet.

“The forms carry the instructions so that the students do not fail to carry domicile proof with them. I realized the importance of this process after police officials asked us to provide them with addresses of eight students who had passed out from the faculty nearly seven years ago,” Vyas said.

When asked what the police were investigating then, he said, “I did not ask them about that but the investigations were certainly being carried out by the Delhi-CID.”

Elsewhere, Dean Faculty of Fine Arts, Prof Deepak Kannal said, “We have not receive any official communication in this regard.”

The other faculties were also not aware of this requirement when their forms were sent for printing. They will be taking up this task from the next academic session onwards.

However, Prof A R Hingorani, Dean, Faculty of Commerce said he we will take up the process during the enrollments.
