Authorities at the M S University (MSU) have embarked on plan to set up a Convention Centre in the land available at the backside of the Commerce Faculty canteen.
MSU Vice-Chancellor (V-C),Prof Ramesh Goyal, along with University Engineer N K Ojha,is working on a proposal that will be submitted to the state government for the sanctioning of funds amounting to Rs 2 crore.
Recently, the government had shown interest in setting up MSU and Gujarat University as model universities of Gujarat. Under this project,it will offer funds to the varsities for further development. The funds offered to MSU under this plan will be utilised in the construction of the Convention Centre.
“We are planning to work out a map wherein the CC Mehta Auditorium, which is close to the Commerce Faculty canteen, can be extended and converted into the Convention Centre, which has a capacity of accommodating over 1,000 people. If our proposal is accepted by the government,it would be for the first time that Gujarat will house a Convention Centre,” said Prof Goyal.
Such an infrastructure has been set up only in Hyderabad and Bangalore,he said, adding: “The area near the Commerce Faculty canteen is quite suitable for the Convention Centre, which requires a small seminar hall,an open space as well as a guest house. It can be worked out with some amount of extension.”
A Convention Centre, which accommodates everything from guest houses to exhibition halls, could be as expensive as Rs 10 crore, but most of these facilities are already available with the MSU. All it needs is a little bit of renovation and a few more rooms. All this can be done in a budget of Rs 2 crore, varsity officials said.
Prof Goyal added: “Compared to Ahmedabad,Vadodara has some drawbacks when it comes to conducting big conferences. However,if our plan works out,MSU might host several big events. In the year 2010,the varsity plans to host two big seminars. We intend to work out the Convention Centre by that time.”
