MSU team deems artefacts found in SSG Hospital unsuitable for display

A team from the Department of Museology of the Faculty of Fine Arts of M S University (MSU),on Monday, visited the spot in the premises of Sir Sayajirao General (SSG) Hospital where ancient remains were recently excavated.

This was after the Jain community of the city and the Archaeological Survey of India expressed keen interest to display the artefacts properly by relocating them to the faculty.

The team of three professors,a curator and technicians, however, changed their mind after they deemed the artefacts unsuitable for display in the department. Nevertheless, the department has offered technical support to the SSG Hospital to display the artefacts in the hospital premises.

On Saturday, the head of the Museology Department had met the superintendent of the SSG Hospital to take charge of the archaeological remains. “Being a museology department,we were looking forward to some sculptures and pillars that can be displayed in the department’s museum. It would have been a practice for the students on displaying techniques and light effects used in display. But we found some huge fragments that are of no use to us,and we have a space constraint as well,” said Naresh Shah,Head,Department of Museology,MSU.

He added,“We also thought of placing it around the faculty of fine arts, but that will serve no purpose as the pieces will be equally short of maintenance as they are here.”

However, the department will submit a letter requesting the SSG Hospital authorities to display the pieces within the campus. “The pieces can be displayed in the parks or any empty space within the SSG campus, and we will give them technical support for display,” said Shah. After the site survey made by an ASI team,a report on the remains was submitted, but no further action was taken by the ASI.
