It would have been a matter of pride for the Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU), if those at the helm of the affairs had implemented the recommendations suggested by the university’s PhD Committee.
In December 2008, the PhD Committee, under former Vice-Chancellor Manoj Soni, had drafted rules for scholars to improve the quality of research. However, the recommendations were not implemented.
This year, the University Grants Commission (UGC), issuing similar guidelines, has asked the universities to strictly follow the norms while awarding MPhil and PhD.
Sources said the MSU PhD committee recommendations were shelved with no inputs from Vice-Chancellor Prof Ramesh Goyal.
While MSU is yet to implement the new guidelines, private university Sumandeep Vidyalaya University has already implemented UGC recommendations.
The PhD Committee in MSU was headed by the Research Centre Director B B Chatoo. Dean, Faculty of Management, G C Maheshwari was also a member. Others who were on the committe were:
S S Bhattacharya, P M Patel and Parimal Vyas.
When Chatoo was contacted, he said: “The recommendations have been made and it is taken up with PG Council”.
Maheshwari said: “The PhD Committee met on Wednesday and have discussed the guidelines. There are some issue to be discussed with the PG Council, which meets thrice annually.”
Vice-Chancellor Prof Ramesh Goyal, who heads the PG Council, said: “We will give a go-ahead to the recommendations. Certain technicalities such as keeping PG Committee recommendations abreast with UGC recommendations were missing. We will implement them soon.”
