The special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court has sentenced an employee of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) to two years rigorous imprisonment. He was accused of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from the orphaned minor daughter of a colleague.
The Special Judge SP Hayatnagarkar observed that the prosecution evidence was substantial to prove that the accused Suhas Belsare,had demanded and accepted the bribe amount thus he has been found guilty of several charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
According to the prosecution,the complainant Mincy George is 20-year-old and staying at an orphanage in the eastern suburbs. In 2002,the girls mother Elsamma George who was also an employee of MTNL died a natural death. The girl was due for a monthly pension. Elsamma used to sit next to the accused in the security supervision and internal planning department of MTNL. However,when the deceased relative,also an employee of MTNL,sought for the pension cheques from Belsare,a demand of Rs 25,000 was made for releasing the cheques.
According to the prosecution,the complainant was informed about the demand and subsequently she lodged a complaint with the CBI. The CBI laid a trap and arrested the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe.
The prosecution during the trial examined six witnesses,including the complainant who identified the accused in the court.
