Mumbai University is all set to become the first varsity in the state to set up a multi-purpose synthetic turf ground at its sports pavilion at Marine lines.

Mumbai University is all set to become the first varsity in the state to set up a multi-purpose synthetic turf ground at its sports pavilion at Marine lines. The proposed renovation work of the pavilion is estimated to cost Rs 5 crore, which includes synthetic ground with sprinklers, seating stand etc.

The MU sports pavilion was inaugurated in 1958 by the then

chief minister Yashwantrao Chavan. Since then, this will be the first time that the ground will get a face lift. The ground spread across five acres currently has a seating

capacity of 2,000.

Uttam Kendre, director of sports and physical education department of MU,said,“The only synthetic turf in Mumbai is at the Mumbai Hockey Association in Churchgate. We used to hire that ground for hockey matches and tournaments, but it cannot be used for other sports. We had to postpone or cancel matches during rainy season. Now,we will not face such problems.”

The seating stand of the pavilion has also been in a dilapidated condition for the past few years and the varsity had declared it dangerous. Though the MU was using the ground and renting it out to schools and colleges,it didn’t allow the use of the stands.

“The seating stand was broken and needed immediate repairs. However, the repair work got delayed as we were planning to to renovate the entire sports ground. The only university to have a synthetic turf for sports is Kerala University. As per the plan, seating capacity would be doubled and the pavilion will have dormitories for outstation players. We are awaiting sanction from the state government,” Kendre said.
