The CBI, which is investigating the disproportionate assets case against former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, has sought information regarding his assets from the state Assembly Secretariat.
The investigating agency, in a letter to Vidhan Sabha Principal Secretary Rajendra Prasad Pandey, has asked for the attested copies of Mulayam’s property details in 1977 when he was Co-operative Minister in the Janata Party Government.
Vidhan Sabha sources said the former Chief Minister in 1977 had declared that he owned 2.53 acres of land and a house in Saifai village in Etawah district and Rs 13,000 in bank accounts in Lucknow and Mainpuri.
He had also declared that he was paying Rs 1,000 as annual premium for a LIC policy and owned a jeep worth Rs 10,000 and a scooter.
Thirty years later, he declared in his affidavit submitted with his nomination paper to contest Assembly elections from Bharthana, that he had movable and immovable assets worth Rs 2.23 crore, including 14.63 acres of land and Rs 35 lakh in eight bank accounts.
Vidhan Sabha sources said Pandey received the CBI letter on July 7 and a reply would be sent within a week.
Mulayam maintained that the PIL in the Supreme Court regarding his assets was a conspiracy hatched by the Congress. He has insisted that every citizen had the right to purchase property in the country.
For the record, the CBI had last week raided the office of Mulayam’s Chartered Accountant in Kanpur and claimed to have seized many documents.
