In a bid to facilitate better communication among ATCs (Air Traffic Control) across the Asia Pacific region, the Mumbai airport is overhauling its communication system. The city, which has been designated as the gateway to international traffic, adopted a new communication system,Air Traffic Services Message Handling System (AMHS),on Friday.

This is an International Civil Aviation Organisation mandated switch which is being slowly implemented across the region. India is also the designated Aeronautical Telecommunication Network (ATN) backbone centre in the Asia Pacific to provide ATN to the Middle East and African-Indian ocean regions,AAI said.

“On Friday,Mumbai established links with Singapore. In the future we will establish links with Beijing, and Karachi. Mumbai AMHS will also be linked with Muscat,Colombo,Kathmandu,Dhaka and other international destinations,” an airport official said.
