The BJP is planning a rally in Mumbai to celebrate Narendra Modi's victory in the Gujarat polls after discussion with Modi to settle on the dates when he can address the rally.

BJP national secretary Kirit Somaiyya said, "The BJP state unit will hold a rally. The dates will be announced after discussion with Modi."

He said a similar rally was held after Modi won the 2007 Gujarat elections.

On Thursday morning as election results indicated a clear lead for BJP in the Gujarat polls, BJP state unit workers gathered in large number outside the party headquarters in Mumbai to celebrate. Senior party leaders including BJP Mumbai chief Raj Purohit and Somaiyya led the celebrations.

The workers wore colourful Modi style "pagdis" (turbans) and distributed sweets and burst firecrackers.

Somaiyya said Gujarat had voted to power someone who can not only lead their state but also be a potential prime ministerial candidate. "This is not just a victory for Gujarat or Modi alone as it will benefit the whole country. This time too we are requesting him to address a victory rally in Mumbai that will further lift the morale of party workers here," he said.

Posters congratulating Modi dotted the city. Several senior BJP leaders from the state including BJP national president Nitin Gadkari and deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde had campaigned for Modi. Seventy-five party workers and leaders had been deployed for Modi's campaign.

BJP corporators in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation celebrated with Modi-masks and saffron turbans.
