Mumbai Dabbawalas share management skills at PU seminar

Raghunath Medge and Gangaram Talekar, the president and secretary of Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box, or "dabbawalas", who are the third generation of their family in the business, talked to students of Panjab University about their experience. The duo were here in Chandigarh to attend a seminar, "Shaping Young Minds", organised by All India Management Association in collaboration with University Business School on Tuesday at the Law Auditorium, Panjab University.

The duo explained that the mechanism of supplying chain management enables them to run a Rs 50 crore empire with the help of around 5,000 persons, mostly illiterate. These 5,000 people are divided into 800 teams. Each team consists of 20-25 members. Every team has a leader who manages the whole team.

During their leadership, they said they have only 1 per cent error rate in 16 million transactions. Every team is assigned with a colour painted on the tiffins for smoother work. The duo stated that everyone works as a team. Every member is able to earn an amount of Rs 10,000-Rs 12,000 a month. They charge about Rs 600 a month per tiffin and manage transactions of about Rs 2 lakh per day.

The first session was conducted by Justice N Santosh Hegde, former lokayukta of Karnataka who shared his experience with around 120 young students of th euniversities. This session was intended to discuss the law and order situation and democracy in India.

The second session was conducted by Parikshit Sahni, an actor, who conducted his session talking about his experience and cinematography. He shared his experience as a director, and as an actor and answered their questions. The third session was conducted by Aquil Busrai, CEO of Aquil Busrai Consultancy. He was representing the corporate world and stated that the young people entering the corporate world have fresh thoughts and knowledge.
