The financial capital of India,Mumbai, though one of the major job providers, ranks among the lowest in financial penetration, according to a report on urban indicators of the top 200 cities in India. New Delhi, too, figures in the bottom 10 on financial penetration.
A quarterly report released by Morgan Stanley titled Alphawise City Vibrancy Index: A guide to Indias urbanisation measures the key drivers of urbanisation such as physical infrastructure, financial penetration, consumer services and job listings. The report ranks top 200 cities in India as per these parameters.
According to the report,Mumbai stands among the top 10 cities on job opportunities but doesnt find place in the top 10 on the vibrancy index. Delhi, however, finds its place in the top 10 on overall vibrancy.
Surprisingly, cities like Mysore and Meerut top the tables for the financial penetration and consumption indices.
Bangalore remains the most vibrant city among the top 50 cities in India and ranks high on consumption and job opportunities metrics. However it is not among the top 10 cities in the countries in terms of financial penetration. During the past six months,Coimbatore has seen a pick up in financial penetration and job opportunities index and, thus, has made its way into the top 10 vibrant cities. On the other hand,Patna slipped into the bottom 10,says the report.
The variation between the top 50 cities and next 150 cities seems to be sharpest for consumption, where the top 50 cities grew at about half the pace of the remaining 150 cities. Urbanisation is a core component to the process of city formation and building Indias competitive strength in the global markets, said Ridham Desai, head of India Research and India Strategist at Morgan Stanley.
The financial penetration index, saw more growth in the next 150 cities than for the top 50 cities. In the consumption index, the cities outside the top 50 saw a steeper pickup than the top 50 did. Mid range sedan dealerships (among the next 50 cities) and gyms (among the top 50 cities) were the fastest growing segments during the past six months.
Even as 30 to 35 per cent of the top 50 wait for a big multiplex or a high-end gym to set up shop in their city, about 80 per cent of these cities already have a new-age food chain present.
Less than 10 per cent of Indias top 200 cities have a 5 Star hotel. Hypermarkets and supermarkets are present almost in all top 50 cities, but big department stores are yet to make an entry in half of these cities.
