Rallying behind New Delhi after the Mumbai massacre and sending a tough political message to Islamabad, the international community today promised to bring to justice those involved with the recent terror attacks against India.
While they did not mention Pakistan by name, the world leaders here underlined the importance of getting not just to the perpetrators of the attacks but all those who “organise, sponsor and incite terrorism”.
“We are united with India in our resolve to intensify efforts to fight terrorism which constitutes a threat to each of our country as well as to international peace and security”, the leaders of the world’s eight leading industrialised countries, five major developing nations, and the heads of various international organisations said in a statement issued here.
Briefing reporters on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s day-long interaction with other leaders in a bilateral as well as multilateral setting, the Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran said, the outcome today was a “major diplomatic gain for India”.
As Singh headed here to join the G-8 summit, the Foreign Office was quite confident of getting a collective international denunciation of the Mumbai blasts.
The focus of India’s intense diplomatic effort in the last couple of days was on beefing up the statement to send a clear message to Pakistan that it cannot evade the consequences of promoting terrorism in India.
The leaders at the G-8 summit today responded in full measure. “We express our readiness to undertake all necessary measures to bring to justice perpetrators, organisers, sponsors of these and other terrorist acts, and those who incited them to commit them,” the leaders said.
