A Muslim couple was arrested for allegedly burning a copy of their holy book in suburban Govandi area.

Mastan Shah and his wife Noor Bano Shah told the police that they were burning the book as it was very old and tattered and they did not want to throw it.

Angry neighbours who saw the holy book being burnt, assaulted Noor and Mastan. The couple’s house was also vandalised.

According to the police, the incident came to light on Wednesday morning when Noor was burning some papers outside her house.

One of her neighbours spotted a copy of Quran among the papers set afire. When they tried to stop her, she picked up a quarrel.

Noor’s husband, Mastan allegedly started threatening the neighbours and assaulted some of them, police said.

Police later arrested the couple.

Noor and Mastan have been booked under Sections 295 (intent to insult the religion of any class) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
