When her husband Bill Clinton visited India in 2000, he brought along his daughter, Chelsea, and his mother-in-law, Dorothy Rodham, leaving the then first lady, Hillary, in the US. Nine years later, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will land in Mumbai on Friday for a five-day India visit.
As a gesture of solidarity with India’s fight against terrorism, she will stay at the Hotel Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, one of the targets of the 26/11 terror attacks last year. Clinton will be given a tour of the Heritage Wing—where her husband had stayed—which is being restored. The fifth and sixth floors that housed the presidential suites were severely damaged in the fire the terrorists set off on 26/11.
Clinton will be staying in the Tower wing on the 11th floor. The 10th and 11th floors have been cordoned off for security reasons. “The Palace wing, although non-functional at the moment for the guests, has specially been opened for Mrs Clinton and a suite renovated and redone especially for her,” says an assistant manager of the hotel.
“She will also be meeting top Indian businessmen at a luncheon hosted by Ratan Tata.”
She has also made her food preferences clear and executive chef Hemant Oberoi is taking care to see that all the dishes are prepared by him.
