The European Union will grant Rs 3.5 crore to Mumbai University to study diaspora and migration under the Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN CoHab) project.
The Marie Curie Initial Training Network will be carrying out the four-year research with support from the EU. Along with well-known universities such as Muenster University of Germany,Oxford University,Stockholm University and the London School of African and Oriental Studies,MU is also joining in. It is a very prestigious thing for the university, said Dr Rajpal Hande, director,Board of Colleges and University Development.
The universitys Group for Research on Indian Diaspora (GRID),which includes senior professors from sociology, literature, philosophy and other departments, has been formed recently to conduct extensive studies on the topic.
With diaspora studies emerging as a serious field of knowledge, the GRID was also planning to propose a new paper at the Masters level. And the grant from the EU may prove to be a boon for MU students who are already researching on Indian diaspora.
According to a report by the Geneva-based World Organisation for Migration, the total population of migrants in the world was 15 crore in 2000,which increased to 21.40 crore in 2011. This shows that a population equivalent to that of a small country is living a migrants life, added Dr Hande.
Due to migration all over the world, concepts such as home and belonging have become obscure,Dr Hande said. He added: This led to various dramatic changes and challenges for the cultural, social and political fields. The study of diaspora and migration has, therefore, evolved into a burgeoning field of research with an urgent practical relevance.
