The Mumbra unit of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), a socio-religious organisationon, on Sunday organised a day-long workshop on entrepreneurial skills to encourage youths to set up their own businesses. Titled 'Self Employment Guidance Programme', the workshop focused on key issues to be addressed while starting a venture and the various financial as well as technical aid provided by central and state governments.

Anand Malwade, project manager, Maharashtra Centre for Entrepreneurs Development (MSED) and one of the key speakers at the workshop, said, "If proper and sufficient training is provided, anyone can start their own business. The MSED provides such training along with an annual stipend to all registered candidates. Training in cellphone and car repairing are popular choices among men while women candidates usually opt for fashion and lifestyle ventures such as jewellery designing or tailoring," Malwade said, adding that the service industry is the most popular choice of entrepreneurs.

Officials from government organisations such as the Micro Small Medium Enterprise - Directorate of Industries and National Small Industry Centre were also present at the event.

Over 200 persons aged between 17 and 40 years, mostly residents of Mumbra and nearby areas, attended the event. The audience comprised those having their own business but are looking for guidance and also those who are keen on their own start-ups. "As unemployment is a serious issue that needs attention especially in India, the workshop was a bid to raise awareness about various governmental schemes that promote self-employment. Ignorance about these schemes is a major hurdle in the way of people opting for self-employment," said Maqsood Khan of JIH.
