JBS Vidyadhar’s fairytale ended today, as the unseeded 29-year-old was done in by his Andhra Pradesh teammate P Kashyap in the singles final of the Patni Computers-All-India Major Ranking Badminton Championship here.
For Kashyap, it was his second title in successive weeks.
While Kashyap made his final look mediocre with a no-nonsense 21-12, 21-13 win, it was the women’s singles between Trupti Murgunde and Aditi Mutatkar that kept spectators at the WIE Sports Complex engrossed.
Having always ended up as the bridesmaid, top-seeded Trupti suffered initial hiccups, losing the first game (16-21) to Aditi.
Trupti’s seven-point recovery from 1-7 in the second game gave her reason to believe, think and execute a plan. Wrapping up the second at 25-23, which included saving three match points, the third saw Aditi virtually play at less than half her pace.
“I’ve been fitter... this week, though I must say that this is my fifth tournament in-a-row,” said Trupti.
Kashyap was the man in form in the men’s singles. And Vidyadhar’s stiffness on court (three consecutive big matches) helped the winner. Kashyap finished off the match in 35 minutes. Kashyap pocketed Rs 1 lakh, the biggest cheque of his career, while Trupti took home Rs 60,000.
