India on Monday said it was not surprised over former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's admission of use of US military aid against it during his tenure and asked countries providing such help to be "extremely responsible".

"It doesn't come as a surprise. We have for some years now arguing that the only problem we have with the US military aid to Pakistan is its misuse against us," Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor said when asked about Musharraf's remarks on Sunday in an interview.

Noting that India welcomes any support by foreign countries to Pakistan to fight homegrown terrorism, he said

"But we do not feel that such assistance should be turned around and used against us. We pose no threat to Pakistan and we find this kind of diversion is neither in the interest of the sub-continent nor in those who are giving assistance."

Confirming India's fears, Musharraf has said that military aid provided by the US to Pakistan for the war against terrorism was used during his tenure to strengthen defences against New Delhi.

"The only way forward must be for those who give assistance to Pakistan to be extremely responsible when its come to monitoring the use of the assistance to ensure that assistance of military nature is used for the purpose for which it is intended and not used for the completely irrelevant purpose of strengthening Pakistan's military ambition against this peace-loving country," Tharoor said.

In defence of Shashi Tharoor's viewpoint (contd)By: Anirban Mukherjee | 15-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Any meaningful foreign policy will have all options open. Look at the US going to the negotiating table with Iran next month even as they pursue possible hardening of economic sanctions should the talks fail. Just jingoistic hatred towards Pakistan will not serve India's purpose. We need to grow up as a people, and start behaving like a responsible, strong (and therefore calm) nation if we want to be counted as an international power in the world stage. To wage a war requires strength, but to usher in peace requires greater courage. As I had said, I feel only pity for my fellow countrymen who do not even think of stooping to the level of calling a fellow citizen a Pakistani just because that citizen has a differing point of view and saner approach to suggest. We have fought three wars with Pakistan already, but that has not solved our problems. We need to be smarter this time and work with the international community, including the US, to reign in the rogue elements in Pakistan.
Thanks, but howBy: Kalidas M | 15-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward All this is nothing more than a writing on a cloud. Do you think you have invented something new? All this, yes, but who will do it and how? All I see here is "should be, need to be done". Can you please elaborate roles to be played by concerned people to help this philosophy to attain reality? If you tell me it is our leaders, I will die laughing, so, have mercy on me. Comparing US with India is ... out of context to see the least. Pray, give solution and I will be the first volunteer. Promise. I myself have a bundle of suggestions, I hold back on to them for I see no takers.
US is not incomparable to IndiaBy: Anirban Mukherjee | 16-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Also, with respect to your comment about the inappropriateness of comparing India with the US, I do beg to differ. Yes, we have miles to go before we become a fully developed nation, but in terms of overall economic, technological, scientific, enterpreneural, democratic, cultural strengths, if not military capacity, we are closer to the US than you think. I have faith in my country and it is based on our real, intrinsic strengths. When the US financial sector cried "Bailout!" and the Bush Admn was found dumbstruck as Lehmann collapsed, we in India managed Satyam's collapse in exemplary fashion. So, we are not as worthless, and neither are our leaders - political, corporate, and others - as you might think.
Here's what I think, if you do care to readBy: Anirban Mukherjee | 16-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Well, what I am saying is fairly straight-forward, unless you've already made up your mind not to understand it.We should engage with Pakistan both on Track II level and continue engaging directly (as in Egypt recently) if we see improvements/concessions by Pakistan on the follow-up to the 26/11 probe. At the same time, we must keep up the pressure on Pakistan through the international community (US, as we are doing now, the EU, UK and other major stakeholders/financiers of Pakistan). Money talks. If the flow of aid is made contingent by the US, EU, UK, Japan, etc on specific action on the terror front, the Pakistani authorities will comply for sure, and it will be much more effective than any military option.
USA aidBy: John | 15-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Shashi Tharoor has been in diplomacy for a long time and does he really believe that Pakistan diverted American aid into terror activities with the approval of USA??
India is the culprit!By: Jaggi | 15-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward India is the culprit! We buy arms and reactors from hostile obama admin - US makes a profit.US sends that profit as ransom money to pakpak spends portion of ransom money to on terrorists- against Indiapak spends remaining money to buy arms - against IndiaUS is safe because of ransom money but India which contributes to ransom money is not safe.
no returnBy: prasad | 15-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward wakeup politicians, it is really waste of time dealing with pakistan, if we handover musharaf also pakistan will deny. it is real fact every one knows what Pakistan and USA upto. Arms to PakBy: Big P | 15-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward I think George Bush was right "Nuke Pak to Stone Age" for peace in the world.
