Musical History revisited

Celebrating the 100 years of Indian Cinema, a tryst of the journey of classical music was the setting at the FTII (Film and Television Institute of India) here Pyarelal Sharma of the Laxmikant Pyarelal duo ran through the pages of history explaining the importance of amalgamating Indian classical music in films. Along with him were Pt Rajan-Sajan Mishra, flautist Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia and ex-director of the FTII Pankaj Raj who in turn interacted with the audiences on the subject. "The Indian film industry has a rich heritage of incorporating classical music right from the times of Alam Ara," said Pyarelal,who conquered the audiences with extempore renderings of his (their) own compositions and that of other prominent music composers. Ek pyar ka nagama hain, Satyam shivam sundaram, Aapke pehlumain aakar and Jago Mohan pyare. Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia recalled his early days in the training of music and how he later entered film music world the journey from through Silsila and other films. He also elaborated his association with Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and their combined creations. The event concluded with a screening of Adwait Sangeet' (Two Voices One Soul, 86 minutes), a film on life and work of Pandit Rajan and Pandit Sajan Mishra, directed by Makarand Brahme.
