Musical reminiscences

Renowned Sarangi exponent Pandit Ram Narayan has been awarded the O P Nayyar award by the OP Nayyar Foundation for the year 2011-2012. The trustees of the OP Nayyar foundation Nandu Belwalkar and Rohan Pusalkar announced the award comprising a silver trophy and a cash honorarium of Rs.51,000 to Pt Narayan in recognition of his contribution in the field of Indian music. The Award ceremony will be held on March 3 at Yeshwantrao Chavan Natyagruha, Pune and will be followed by a programme of popular songs of Nayyar along with Pt. Narayan sharing his experiences on the artistic use of sarangi by and his experiences with the maestro. Pt Narayan has played sarangi for Nayyar in many romantic songs like Kahi Pe Nigahe Kahi Pe Nishana, Ye Kya Kar Dala Tune and Main Pyar Ka Rahi Hun, among others.

Sufi magic

The 12th Ruhaniyat, an all-Indian Sufi and mystic music festival is back in Pune. Conceived and designed by Mahesh Babu, managing director, Banyan tree, way back in the year 2001 in Mumbai, Ruhaniyat brings unheard of, but immensely talented carriers of living traditions from remote parts of the country to limelight. This year the festival is travelling to two more cities—Raipur and Ahmedabad—which makes it a 9 city festival covering Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune and Bengaluru along with the two new additions. Ruhaniyat will be held on February 10 from 6:30 pm onwards at Empress Botanical Garden, Camp. The performances at Ruhaniyat include Sema by Whirling Dervishes (Turkey), Kabirpanthi Nirguni Songs by Prahlad Tipanya (M.P.), sufi kalam and mystic Songs by Kachra Khan & Group (Rajasthan), bharud and abhang to be presented by Avadhoot Gandhi & Group (Maharashtra), baul songs by Parvathy Baul (West Bengal), and qawwali by Shabbir Taj & Group (Kanpur).
