Prominent Muslim organisations, including Jamait Ulema-e-Hind, Muslim Personal Law Board and Jamait-e-Islami, will hold a two-day conference on terrorism beginning August 20 at the Parliament annexe. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, along with Islamic clerics and delegates from madarsas across the country, will attend the conference.
The conference, titled Dahshatgardi: Isbab aur Tdaruk (Terrorism: Causes and Remedy), is being organised to find ways to counter terrorism.
‘‘We have to fight terrorism together as its tentacles are spreading. Muslims have always stood behind the nation and we have to chalk out plans to deal with the menace,’’ says Mahmood Madani, general secretary of Jamait Ulema-e-Hind and Rajya Sabha member. He is also the convener of the conference.
Another objective of the conference is to bring to the fore some of the cases in which Muslims have been booked falsely, says Madani. ‘‘If the innocent are framed then there will be an uprising in the community. That is why we will also discuss how innocent Muslims should not become a target in the name of fighting terrorism,’’ he adds. Claiming the conference to be the first of its kind, he says: ‘‘Ulemas (Muslim scholars) had played their role in national building process and they should never be looked at with suspicion.’’
Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Rahman Khan, Home Minister Shivraj Patil and I&B Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi have also been invited to the conference.
