In a significant development – first of its kind during the last 20 years of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir,a Muslim family killed a top Lashkar commander and injured his two associates with axes and lathis at Shahdra Sharief near border Rajouri district last night.

Identified as Uzafa Shah,a Pakistani national, the slain commander had been operating in Rajouri-Poonch districts for the last 3-4 years. He had been the only top surviving commander of Lashkar in the area at present.

Senior Superintendent of Police,Rajouri,S P Watali, said that they have found blood trails of the absconding militants one of whom has even left behind his weapon. The civilians have handed over to police an AK 56 and an AK 47 rifle.

Giving details, sources said that three militants went to Bhatti mohalla in Upper Shahdra Sharief around 9 pm and knocked at the doors of Noor Ahmed. However,as the inmates of the house did not respond to their repeated knocks, militants tried to break open the doors forcing the inmates to respond.

Once militants got the doors opened, they started beating the family members. One of them even fired a shot which hit Noor Hussain’s brother Wakalat Hussain in the left arm.

Thinking that they would be killed by militants, the family members including women and children decided to retaliate and attacked them with axe and lathis. While one of them was killed, the other two got injured and fled.

Though there have been sporadic incidents of unarmed civilians resisting armed militants from forcibly entering their houses or trying to molest their female members,it has been for the first time in last 20 years of militancy that they have killed a militant commander and injured two others.
