Australia and India may use Kevin Rudd's visit to announce the start of negotiations towards a free trade agreement.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will visit India this week and will discuss hosts of issues inluding frequent attacks on Indian students, uranium sale and forging better bilateral ties.

Rudd on his two day visit will be travelling to Mumbai and New Delhi as of Wednesday in what appears to be as a part of country's damage control exercise after International student attack crisis in Australia. Rudd is scheduled to meet his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on Thursday.

The AAP report said that Rudd will be attending a cricket match in Mumbai, where he will meet many Indian business leaders. Sale of uranium from Australia to India and Rudd goverment's stand to not give the same as New Delhi is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is also expected to come up during the parleys, ahead of a review of the NPT next year.

Australia and India may use the visit to announce the start of negotiations towards a free trade agreement after a feasibility study reportedly found a deal to be favourable to both countries.

India is Australia's fourth biggest export market and, like China, is crucial to growth prospects over the coming decades.

From India, Rudd heads to Singapore for the 17th annual summit of leaders from the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies, on November 14-15.

The Prime Minister will use his visit to focus on a range of issues, including climate change, a conclusion to the Doha round of world trade talks and his long-term proposal for an Asia-Pacific Community.

Australia needs to act now By: amon | 13-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Australia needs to act now to close all the dodgy colleges who are exploiting and cheating international students in the name of education provider. Many dodgy colleges Like AICL. One teacher in a single class for Information Technology, Business Management, Accounting. Subjects. Classes are crowded, the number of students are double than number of seats/computers in the class. There is no hardware/network lab for Diploma of Information Technology course, no printing lab for Diploma of Printing and Graphics course. Students complained to NSW VETAB. But they are getting away from NSW VEATB audit. These colleges should be closed down and prosecuted for fraudulent.
Useless Son - Useless as EverBy: Rodgers Father | 12-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward I hope there are number of issues discussed by the respective PM"S of their countires. Amongst it is should include uranium sales, fake students documents originating from India, speedy ways to resolve student issues when their colleges close down %u2013 by way of one stop centre, increased trade more imports from India to balance the trade, carbon emission etc The other issue is of my irrational munna. Having arrived in Australia now he continually bags Australia. He sees nothing positive in Australia and still stays here. He should be deported. India will not take him back as he is a Pakistan sympathiser. Pakistan should take him. They musT be proud of him. He produces so much gas (you know the type I mean) that if that is converted to a form of energy this solves the world%u2019s energy issues for long term. Both countries must discuss how to harness his carbon emission.
australiaBy: bala srinivasan | 10-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward instead of whining about the australians&their attitude why not show some stiffer backbone and demand with firm conviction what is expected from australian govt&boldly enunciate the consequences of their noncompliance&be prepared to follow up.now that kind of response will make not just RUDD but the whole australia sit up&take serious note of the RESURGENT INDIA as different from POST COLONIAL INDIA.
India must grab the opportunityBy: Dr Tarashankar Rudra | 10-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Dear Sir/Madam, Mr Rudd is the one of the most popular Australian Prime Minister of the recent past and he is a world class diplomat as Dr Manmohan Singh. India must use every bit of his time to boost bilateral trade, research and student exchanges for greater co-operation in business and science and technology respectively. India may also use this opportunity to convince Australia to sell uranium for electricity generation under IAEA guidelines/supervision.
Australia needs to understandBy: Jay | 10-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward That nowhere in the world are one billion people living under the umbrella of democracy and yet India is not on UNSC and was discriminated against by the Nuclear groups. To rectify this great wrong, Australia must sell Uranium to India. It is a gesture that will go down well with the Indian people.
