My role in ‘Pathshala’ not a guest appearance: Shahid

Shahid Kapoor, who plays a teacher in 'Paathshaala',has denied that his role is a guest appearance.

Shahid Kapoor, who plays an open-minded teacher in upcoming film ‘Paathshaala’,has denied that his role is merely a guest appearance.

“‘Paathshala’ may be small in comparison to some other films that I am doing and I may not be a quintessential hero here. However,it isn’t as if I have a guest appearance in the film,as has been speculated by some,” Shahid said.

Earlier,it was reported that Shahid was making a guest appearance in the movie for his choreographer friend Ahmed Khan, who is producing it. The situation today is that he is the central point of the film’s promotion.

“I have a substantial role that lasts for around 50 minutes in the film and that too from start to finish. I guess that’s a good enough presence, isn’t it?,” says Shahid.

Nana Patekar is playing the role of a school principle who locks horns with Shahid’s character in the movie, which touches upon the school education system in our country.

“There are scenes between Nana and me in the film. They are quite integral to the narrative as well and do bring in a dramatic high. But Nana is playing a much quieter person in the film. His character is an introvert and approaches things in a much subtle manner,” says Shahid who is sharing screen with the veteran actor for the first time.

With Nana and Shahid around,it pretty much looks like a chalk and cheese combination. While Shahid is known for being quite mild,Nana is known for his fireworks. Was this total contrast in personality a major reason behind Ahmed Khan roping in these actors?

“Well, yes in a way that’s true because a lot of consideration was given to the fact that who were the people who wanted to support this film. Nana and I haven’t never worked before so there is a definite freshness that comes in.

He has done a fabulous job in the film and it would be there for all to see.”

Is Shahid looking at delivering a message with the movie?

“The story is about this school that has Nana along with other teachers played by Ayesha Takia,Sushant Singh and myself. All of these are important characters in the film. The story told is personal rather belonging to the kind that goes on to make a universal statement. The idea is to make people think hard on how we can ease pressure off our children by doing the right kind of things at school.”

Shahid maintains that in spite of the dramatic elements, there are enough sweet moments in the film to keep audience smiling. “There is a little bit of drama and a lot of emotions. But then there are quite a few nice and warm moments as well, especially the ones that involve interaction between children and me.”

Directed by Milind Ukey,’Paathshaala’ releases all over on April 16.
