I could complete such a long bicycle tour not because of my spirit. It was my sons spirit that gave me the strength.
K Unnikrishnan, the 62-year-old father of National Security Guard (NSG) commando Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan who died fighting terrorists at the Taj Mahal Hotel, had started his bicycle tour a month back from India Gate in New Delhi.
On Friday,at the Gateway of India in Mumbai,he paid tribute to his son and all other brave men who laid down their lives fighting terrorists. He had started his tour across the nation on October 26,to remind people of the sacrifice made by the soldiers.
Unnikrishnan was accompanied by his wife throughout the tour. Bicyclist Hiralal Yadav also gave them company.
I promised my son that I will carry forward his thoughts and deeds and this cycle tour was a gesture in that direction, said Unnikrishnan as he completed his tour covering almost 2,000 kilometres.
In future I will continue to undertake activities to keep memories of my son alive, said Unnikrishnan.
Asked whether the journey had been a tiring one,he said if he had to,he could return to Delhi on a bicycle.
I wish there is not much publicity about my tour, he had said while starting his journey. His worry was whether his tour to Mumbai, which would culminate at the Taj,may create any law and order problems as a large number of people may gather to greet him. Although there was no such problems, the last leg of his journey was somewhat impeded by crowds.
The trip to Mumbai was not at all difficult but the last leg of the journey was tough for me due owing to the crowds that turned up to greet me, said Unnikrishnan.
Unnikrishnan met the families of martyrs who died during the 26/11 and some who lost their lives in Jammu & Kashmir,as well. A stage was erected near the Gateway to welcome Unnikrishnan, who was was also greeted by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.
