Following the Mumbai terror attacks, politicians, pundits and the press have created many myths, confusions and falsehoods. These deserve to be exposed in favour of clearer thinking.

Myth 1: “When it comes to terrorism, India and Pakistan are now victims of a common enemy.”

President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan has expansively promoted this myth and many in the West and some in India embrace it. In an interview on CNN, Zardari said: “The state of Pakistan is of course not involved. We’re part of the victims.” A week later, he wrote in the New York Times: “Not only are the terrorists not linked to the government of Pakistan in any way, we are their targets and continue to be their victims.”

But this is a treacherous claim. True, Pakistan has been subject to several terrorist attacks recently including the one on the Marriott

Hotel that killed more than 50 people three months ago. But India and Pakistan are not victims of the same terror groups. Pakistan suffers at the hands of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda groups whom it is now fighting on the Afghan border alongside the US. But Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) that sent terrorists to Mumbai recently and Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) that attacked the Parliament in 2001 do not terrorise Pakistani citizens.

Instead, they have had a history of receiving patronage from Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI. It is only under intense international pressure that Pakistan has recently arrested the leaders of these outfits. The ease with which the Pakistani army was able to round them up testifies to the cozy relationship between the two.

Myths from MumbaiBy: Disgusted Indian | 17-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward Dismantling terrorist camps in PAK Occupied Kashmir by any means has become very crucial. Rabid fanatics like Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar should be neutralised. These people do not realise that, while thinking of themselves as "True Believers", their ancestors were raped, murdered and enslaved by the invading Arab armies in 8th century during attack on Debal/Devalaya. That is how they were inducted into their faith centuries ago. Ignorance is bliss for these fanatics.
interesting refreshingBy: am | 16-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward A very good article. I would like people to give such news in news paper which are true and factually correct. unfortunately today lots of media and intellectuals look into own self benefit and give comments. In India it is really impossible to find a true media person who has no biased views of the various problems involved.
US mediaBy: grameen | 16-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward well, my countrymen. It is the western liberal media. If you realize it or not, in the recent time they have beem more and more pro Muslim. I am not trying to give religious color to this. It is the observation. Liberals have their own agenda and they find their friends for the time. Now the money is with the oil counties. The same media (esp NBC - newsweek) was early to jump in and put in their version of "atrocities against Muslims in India" even from day 1 of the attack. They were very hesitant to print the truth that the attackers were Pakistani citizens. They have not stil published the proven statement from US officials. Do not think the liberal media is for truth and justice. That is the number 1 myth. They constantly try to push their aganda. Open your eyes.
Muslim IdentityBy: sk sharma | 16-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward Why then attck on Palestinians by Israelis is given a religious colour? Why Muslims from all over the world raise voice against atrocities(real or perceived) by non-muslims.Why Muslims see the world as muslim and non-muslim?I as a Hindu am not concerned about what is happening to Hindus in Guayana,Maritius,Fizi. Why should an Indian Muslim be perturbed over the plight of Palestinians,Bosnians etc.as a Muslim and not as a human being? That is the crux of matter.
u r not the role modelBy: poovannan | 16-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward dear friend the tamils is tamilnadu and all over the world are concerned about fellow tamils in srilanka.the same holds true for various ethnic groups and even elite groups like lions, rotarians, free masons, jehovas etc.there is nothing wrong in sympathising with suffering people whether they r blacks, dalits or palestinians.even crores of hindus sympathise with palestinians.u have all the right to not sympathise with bosnians or palestinians or tamils but have absolutely no right to say to others that they should not sympathize with them
Great appraisal.By: Hassan | 16-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward What we really appreciate is the appraisal of myth no.5.It is widely accepted now that the terrorists are not byproduct of any religion but mere tools in the hands of politicians.Nobody called Hitler a Christian terrorist when he alleged to be killing 1 million innocents. And we Indians are not ready to call Sadhvi and Conl Purohit as Hindu terrorists just beacuse they have Hindu names. No religion on earth has ever tuaght that killing innocent civilians makes you a pious person. So let's all stop prejudices and come forward to unite against the dreadful ideology of terrorism which divide us and kill humankind.Even our enemies acept that India is a responsible nation and we should prove to them that none of their conspiracy will work in Indian soil. And diving us in the name of religion will be just a dream remained unfulfilled. We fought British united and we will fight this phenomenon also united.
