The government, according to sources, has reconstituted the National Advisory Council (NAC) which is led by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. While two new members Mihir Shah (member Planning Commission) and Ashis Mondal (founder managing trustee of Action for Social Advancement,Bhopal) have been brought in,three incumbents M S Swaminathan,Harsh Mander and Madhav Gadgil have been denied renomination.
The tenure of as many as 14 members of the current NAC had expired on May 31 and the government had to reconstitute it ahead of the next meeting that was initially slated to be held on June 29. The meeting is now learnt to have been postponed for early next month.
While there were two vacancies caused by the death of Ram Dayal Munda and the resignation of Jean Dreze the induction of two new members and dropping of three members makes the reconstituted NAC an 11-member Council.
NAC chairperson (Sonia Gandhi) has written to me thanking my contribution during the NAC deliberations. My original tenure was for two years only and I think it is a right thing to get new members, noted agricultural scientist Swaminathan told The Indian Express, welcoming the move to induct new members.
Me and Swaminathan were two of the senior members of the NAC. The membership term is for one year…. I think one should always make way for the younger blood, Madhav Gadgil told The Indian Express over the development. Harsh Mander also confirmed that he has not been renominated.
The NAC now will comprise Narendra Jadhav,Pramod Tandon,Aruna Roy,N C Saxena,A K Shiva Kumar,Deep Joshi,Anu Agha,Farah Naqvi,Mirai Chatterjee,Mihir Shah and Ashis Mondal as its members with Congress president Sonia Gandhi as its chairperson.
