The Nabardaar Assocation,Punjab, burnt the effigy of comedian Jaswinder Bhalla here today. The members of the association alleged that Bhalla, who is a senior faculty member at the Punjab Agricultural University,Ludhiana, has used ‘highly derogatory’ remarks against the nambardaars of Punjab. The association demanded that either Bhalla delete the controversial portions from his latest release or else the protests would be held state-wide.

Meanwhile, similar protests have already been held in places like Bathinda and Alamgir. The controversial portions are a part of Mithe Poche Chankata 2009 which is Bhalla’s latest release.

Harminder Singh, president of the association, said,“This content of this film implies that the entire nambardaar community was corrupt and accepted bribes for doing their duty. This is not acceptable to us. There can be black sheep in all professions but we cannot paint the entire community with the same brush. Bhalla should delete these remarks from his film.”

Adding to this,Jagdev Singh, another senior member of the association, said,“Bhalla belongs to a community of teachers which is highly respectable and the institution which he represents is again very respectable. Coming from him, such remarks are uncalled for. He is a well-known artist but should always remember that his deeds reflect on his family work and institution from where he comes.” To this,Bir Singh added,“Bhalla should be conscious of what he is saying and keep in mind the fact that he is talking about an entire community of government officials just like him. He should delete these portions immediately.”

When contacted,Jaswinder Bhalla clarifying his stand said,“The association had called me up also and I had explained the entire situation to them. I had even told them that I am ready to apologise in case I have hurt the sentiments of any person.” Bhalla added,“The nambardar that I am talking about in the film is just one character on whom we have cracked a joke and that is all. I have not talked about the entire community,” he added.
