Nandigram firing: Mamata govt to withdraw case from SC

Mamata govt has decided to withdraw SLP filed in SC by previous Left Front govt.

The Mamata Banerjee government has decided to withdraw the special leave petition (SLP) filed in the Supreme Court by the previous Left Front government regarding the March 14,2007 police firing at Nandigram. Fourteen persons had died in the incident.

I have heard that the case will be withdrawn but the details are not with me, said state Law Minister Moloy Ghatak. The shield over the police officers involved in firing has been removed, he added.

In November 2007,the Calcutta High Court had passed an order on the basis of a case that the firing at Nandigram was unjustified and unconstitutional and the state government should award compensation to the next of kin of those killed,to the injured, and to rape victims. While the Left Front accepted the latter part,it challenged the first part in the SC by filing the SLP.
