Nandigram, which of late became the battleground for the ruling Left and firebrand Mamata Banerjee, has been been emphatic in its choicethe area has swung two Lok Sabha seats of Tamluk and Contai in favour of the Trinamool Congress.
CPMs strongman Laxman Seth, who led the charge in recapturing the villages from Trinamool supporters leading to a bloodbath in 2007,has been sent packing by Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated his rival in Tamluk by a margin of 1.73 lakh votes.
Suvendu, along with his father Sisir, had led the resistance movement at
the grassroots level against the state governments move to acquire farmers land for a proposed chemical hub
in Nandigram.
After more than two years, the father-son duo and their party have reaped rich dividends, with Sisir too trouncing the CPM candidate in Contai Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 1.31 lakh votes.
Both Tamluk and Contai fall into East Midnapore district, where the Nandigram issue first made its impact felt when the Trinamool swept the 2008 panchayat polls, ending the CPMs strong hold for years.
Now,with the father-son duo cornering two Lok Sabha seats in the region on Trinamool tickets,Nandigram has come to haunt the Left once again.
On its part, the CPM had fielded Seth from Tamluk despite strong opposition from a section of the party.
The CPM feared that his candidature might work to the advantage of the Trinamool, which had branded him as an evil force who had played a key role in the forcible land acquisition in Nandigram, where 14 villagers were killed after violent clashes with the police on March 14,2007.
