Nandigram swings two seats in East Midnapore in Trinamool’s favour

Suvendu,along with his father Sisir,had led the resistance movement at

the grassroots level against the state government’s move to acquire farmers’ land for a proposed chemical hub

in Nandigram.

After more than two years,the father-son duo and their party have reaped rich dividends,with Sisir too trouncing the CPM candidate in Contai Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 1.31 lakh votes.

Both Tamluk and Contai fall into East Midnapore district,where the Nandigram issue first made its impact felt when the Trinamool swept the 2008 panchayat polls,ending the CPM’s strong hold for years.

Now,with the father-son duo cornering two Lok Sabha seats in the region on Trinamool tickets,Nandigram has come to haunt the Left once again.

On its part,the CPM had fielded Seth from Tamluk despite strong opposition from a section of the party.

The CPM feared that his candidature might work to the advantage of the Trinamool,which had branded him as an “evil force” who had played a key role in the forcible land acquisition in Nandigram,where 14 villagers were killed after violent clashes with the police on March 14,2007.
