Narayana Murthy honoured with global humanitarian award

Philanthropist and co-founder of tech giant Infosys N R Narayana Murthy has been honoured with the James C Morgan Global Humanitarian Award, which recognises contribution of people using technology to change human lives.

Narayana Murthy joins a roster of recipients that includes internet entrepreneur Jeff Skoll, education and cross-cultural dialogue advocate Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, Nobel Laureate and former US Vice President Al Gore, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Applied Materials' Chairman Emeritus James C Morgan, who inspired the award.

"I believe that technology not only has the power to make\ a difference in health, nutrition and sheltering the poor, but it also can enhance one's confidence and dignity," Murthy said in a statement.

The Tech Awards, presented by Applied Materials, also recognised 12 innovators who apply technology in creative and practical ways to improve the human condition in areas such as health, education, environment and economic development.

"Murthy's contribution to India and the Indian IT industry is monumental. He has set the benchmark for doing business globally and has played a large role in putting India on the global IT map," Applied Materials India President and Managing Director Aninda Moitra said.

Since its inception in 2001, the Tech Awards programme has recognised over 240 laureates for their work to change millions of lives for the better.

Infosys established the Infosys Foundation in 1996, which works in partnership with non-governmental organisations to help underprivileged communities in India that are focusing on healthcare, education and rural development initiatives.
