The designated fast-track court in the Naroda Patiya riot case on Thursday framed charges against 60 accused,including BJP MLA and former state minister Maya Kodnani.
Apart from Kodnani,some of the other accused in the case are Babu Bajrangi,Bipin Panchal,Manoj Sindhi,Kishan Korani,Kirpal Singh Chhabda,Rajkumar Chaumal and Mukesh Vakil.
According to Special Assistant Public Prosecutor Gaurang Vyas,Kodnani has been facing serious charges like instigating the mob to riot,using firearms and forming an illegal assembly.
Since Kodnani has been slapped with charge of common intention under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code,she will be held accused of all other charges being faced by other accused except for charges of rape, Vyas said.
According to Vyas,the other accused have been charged with rioting,instigation to the rioting,rape,murder,damage to the private property,committing acts which divide two communities and criminal conspiracy.
Vyas said there are 62 accused in the case at present and charges were not framed against two accused,as they were not present in the court. The court will frame charges against them on Friday. And following that,the trial will commence after Diwali vacation on October 27.
Also accused in Naroda Gam case
Charges have already been framed against Maya Kodnani,former VHP leader Jaydeep Patel and other accused in the Naroda Gam massacre case. Eleven people were killed in the riot. Designated Judge S H Vora has held Kodnani and Patel accused of a range of charges like rioting,instigating mob to riot and hurting the religious sentiments of other communities by damaging their religious places. As many as 81 people are facing trial in the case.
