Navi Mumbai golf course to be opened today

Golf aficionados in the city are in for a treat with the opening of a new golf course at Kharghar, New Mumbai.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar will inaugurate the swanky golf course, spread over 103 acres.

The City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO), in an attempt to develop Kharghar node, had planned an 18-hole golf course at a cost of Rs 53 crore. Work on the project had started in 2008. However, issues pertaining to acquisition of land which comes under forest area has meant that the agency has managed to build an 11-hole golf course at a cost of Rs 37 crore. Interestingly, the project that was completed in February has yet to be open to public.

"We are yet to get clearance from the Forest Department for the remaining holes. We therefore decided to limit the course to 11 holes as of now and throw it open to the public," said CIDCO spokesperson Dr Mohan Ninave.

Kharghar will get another landmark also on Sunday, with the iconic skywalk also set for inauguration.

Despite completion, the project had not been opened to public due to the inability of CIDCO officials to get a known face to inaugurate the projects. The 2-km-long skywalk, which stretches from Kharghar railway station to Utsav Chowk, has been built at a cost of Rs 36 crore.
