  • The Chhattisgarh Government is facing difficulties in implementing the Pradhanmantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in the Naxalite areas, leading to delay in taking up construction of 441 roads in the state.

Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development Ram Vichar Netam, who reviewed the PMGSY progress at a high-level meeting here, asked the officials concerned to study the situation of these roads in Naxalite areas and to draw a plan to begin the construction.

“Construction of roads in remote Naxalite areas has to be taken up on a priority basis. We will seek the help of police and para-military personnel to provide security cover, wherever necessary,” Netam said.

An amount of more than Rs 309 crore has been earmarked for the construction of these 441 roads under the PMGSY in the Naxalite areas but the works either did not begin, or had to be abandoned at some places following threat from the Maoist rebels.

Road construction in the Naxalite areas, particularly in tribal Bastar region, has been a difficult task as the rebels obstruct the work by attacking those engaged in the work and setting ablaze their vehicles and other equipment.
