The Crime Branch on Thursday arrested a suspected Maoist who was an active member of the People's War Group in Jharkhand. Pradeep Kumar Singh was allegedly involved in an ambush in which the Superintendent of Police of Lohargada in Jharkhand was killed in 2000.
Acting on a tip-off, police laid a trap in Rohini Sector 24, where Singh was walking towards the Metro station.
DCP (Crime) S K Jain said Singh was told to stop, but attempted to flee. Police managed to arrest him after a short chase. Singh's son Rakesh is the area commander of the PWG and is the most wanted man in Latehar with cases of kidnapping and murder registered against him, police said.
The police had initially received a tip-off about Singh on April 10, when one Balram Oraon, an area commander of the PWG visited his wife and sent him a message, asking him to return to Jharkhand as the police chase for him had cooled down.
In February, six of his associates had been gunned down by the CRPF and the state police in Saryu during an operation against the PWG.
He was staying with his uncle in Noida Sector 62. At the camp, several youngsters, including girls, were being recruited for the banned outfit.
Jain said, "Singh was wanted in the murder of Dr Ajay Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police, Lohardaga in Jharkhand.
We have recovered a sophisticated pistol along with two live cartridges from his possession."
During his interrogation, Singh revealed that he had joined the PWG in 1990.
He was also part of the Jharkhand Mazdoor Kisan Sangrami Parishad and had taken active part in the movement to create a separate state of Jharkhand. In 1997, he had come to Delhi to take part in a rally in support of a separate Jharkhand state.
