Home Minister P Chidambaram speaks at the India Economic Summit-2009.

Making it clear that the Maoists would not be allowed to have a free run, Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday said control over the naxal-infested areas would be regained in the next two to three years.

"I am confident that in a period of two to three years we will be able to gain total control over these (naxal-infested) areas," he said in an interactive session at the India Economic Summit here.

Chidambaram said since he took over as Home Minister, the states have got involved in tackling the naxal menace and "there is now co-ordinated action against the CPI(Maoists)".

The CPI(Maoists) believe in armed liberation struggle and want to expand their area of influence, he said adding that a democratic republican government cannot allow this. "We have to assert our authority," the Home Minister said.

Chidambaram said it was wrong to think that India was more vulnerable in the "crosshairs of many groups" and asserted "we have the capacity to thwart any attack should there be any attack".

He said the government has the capacity to contain naxal menace in a "swift and decisive manner".

Noting that states are now taking counter-insurgency measures against naxals, he said, "we have had significant successes and we have suffered some casualties too".

Chidambaram said the government had also offered to hold talks with the naxals provided they abjured violence.

He sought to assure the business community about the security situation in the country saying "We are no more vulnerable than any other country in the world.

Naxcalites problemBy: S. Vatsya | 11-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Chidambaram is our best bet. Naxalites, Ulfa and such others are also like Lalu, Koda and others. Merely the path is different. For selfish interest one group is using poor tribals and others; the other group is using muslim, some one else is using Marathi. But in all these cases we should enforce the law. Who ever violates law action as prescribed in law should be taken. The problem is Govt. of india often does not have one yard stick.
Naxals and ChidambaramBy: MK | 11-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Why so much soft corner towards the Naxalites and Maoist by rulling congress party? Is it the same axis as CIA's relation with Taliban in 80's and Naxal-Maoist with Congress! If Gov. wants immediatelly can take action for the quality of life and peace of the people. Until two to three years the infested area residents are on whose pity?
Facist , commo and DILIP/FRANCE thrown out.By: Roti | 10-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Where is DILIP/FRANCE from kaala bazar opp. BJP house? His BJP and his LEFTIST tauji have been voted out of office by the voters in nearly every corner of our country.
How many years for the Indian people to take control over Congress infested areas?By: Hary Nambiar | 10-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The Congress party has been doing its %u201CDusshasan%u201D for over half a century. The nation has gone from bad to worse. People are divided, national security both internal and external has been threatened, dishonesty and religious fanaticism has increased, gap between rich and the poor has widened, the number of people under the poverty line has increased, and the performance of the executive and the bureaucracy has become inefficient, incompetent, irresponsible. Political leaders as well as government officials behave as if the people of India exist for them. How long would it take for the people of India to take control of the Congress infested maladministration of India?
Control over NaxalitesBy: Kalpathy Venkataraman | 10-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward It is not the Naxalites who are real threat to India. Corruption at high places, corrupt judiciary, family rule, corrupt police system, black money, Swiss bank accounts and the politicians with criminal records, communal divide are the real problems to India. What is Chidambaram doing about the MLAs, MPs and Ministers with rap sheets? They freely contest in elections and continue with the illegal activities. What is happening to the Spectrum investigation? After, Karunanidhi decided to postpone the agitation against Jairam Ramesh, the pace of CBI investigation into Spectrum has slowed down. Law enforcement agencies are puppets in the hands of the politicians. Let Manmohan Singh focus on fixing the basic ills of our society and the Naxalite problem will go away on its own.
