The government claim of being fully prepared to take on the Naxalites was called into question in Gadchiroli with a couple of Naxalite attacks in the district. The Naxalites not only burnt down two gram panchayat offices at places with a sizeable police presence but also killed a police constable and his niece over the last three days.
The Naxalites burned down two gram panchayat offices — Korchi and Bedgaon — between midnight and 4 a.m on Wednesday. Both villages are on busy highways and Bedgaon has a regular police outpost with over 40 regular and reserve policemen. The Naxalites perhaps knew that there was to be CRPF deployment in Korchi and Bedgaon on Thursday for elections. In another incident, police constable Naresh Poyam and his niece were shot dead by a group of 30 Naxalites from Sironcha and Platoon Dalams in Kopela village in Sironcha tahsil on Monday night.
