The Deccan Gymkhana police on Monday registered an offence against a teacher of Loyala school in connection with the incident in which a cadet was hit by a bullet during a firing practice at the National Cadet Corps Group headquarters here on February 1.

"An offence under Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the IPC has been registered against the teacher, Amod Anil Ghanekar, who is also the NCC officer. We have not yet arrested him," said senior inspector Manohar Joshi.

The police said that Parag Devendra Ingle (14) stood up "all of a sudden" when his NCC teacher was imparting firing training to the cadets from a 0.22 mm rifle.

A batch of cadets were lying down on the ground to take position for firing training. Just when Ghanekar pulled the trigger showing how to fire, Ingle suddenly stood up and the bullet then hit him in the head, said the police.

He was admitted to the Command Hospital in Wanavdi where his condition is reported to be critical.

His father, Devendra Ingle, said, "The doctors had said on Friday that Parag will respond to treatment within the next 72 hours. But my son has not opened his eyes. I cannot bear to see my son lying on the bed motionless."

He added, "I do not know if the shooting happened by mistake or it was done on purpose. All I want is my son to open his eyes."
