NCP leader Patil in CBI custody for ‘double murder’

Senior NCP leader and Lok Sabha MP Padamsinh Patil has been booked for ‘double murder’,and the Lok Sabha Speaker has been informed of the developments in the case,CBI said.

Patil,who was recently elected to the Lok Sabha from Osmanabad in Marathwada,has been charged with the murder of Congress leader Pawanraje Nimbalkar and his driver three years ago.

After a court here,about 60 kms from Mumbai,sent Patil to CBI custody till June 14,CBI Joint Director Rishiraj Singh told reporters that as per Parliament Rules 229,230,a report has been submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker about arrest and alleged involvement of Patil in the murder case.

“Patil has been booked for conspiracy and double murder.

Further details of the case,if any,will be issued by Lok Sabha Secretariat,” he said.

Two co-accused,Parasmal Jain and Mohan Shukla,had allegedly confessed to the CBI that the former Maharashtra Minister ordered killing of Nimbalkar following business rivalry.

Pawanraje and his driver Samad Kazi were shot dead while travelling on the Mumbai-Pune express highway on June 3,2006,at Kalamboli.

Osmanabad Tense

The arrest of Padamsinh Patil’s on Sunday in connection with Pawanraje Nimbalkar murder case sparked violence in his constituency Osmanabad where party workers forced business establishments to shut down.

NCP workers damaged a van of a private news channel and five buses of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation as the news of Patil’s arrest spread,police sources said.

The situation in the district in Marathwada region of Central Maharashtra was tense but under control,they said. Two companies of State Reserve Police Force have been deployed in the city and additional police force has been pressed into service. So far no one has been arrested in this connection,they said.

Meanwhile,Shiv Sena and BJP activists staged a blockade on Mumbai-Hyderabad National Highway Number 9 near Umerga demanding the resignation of Padamsinh Patil and his son Rana Jagjit Singh Patil,who is minister of state for industries in Ashok Chavan’s cabinet.

The district superintendent of police,additional Superintendent of police and a senior police inspector are on leave for the last two days. Nimbalkar and his driver were shot dead in a car on June 3,2006 at Kalamboli,in Navi Mumbai near here.
