For the last two months, the dilapidated footpaths on streets around Shivaji Stadium in Connaught Place have been undergoing massive overhaul.

The NDMC is focussing on their renovation. The emphasis is on roads bordering the venues under it ¿ the Shivaji Stadium and Talkatora Stadium. The idea is to get them ready for the Commonwealth Games which is less than 365 days away.

Currently four roads — Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Sardar Patel Marg and Mandir Marg — are being renovated.

In a couple of months, work will resume on four others.

Once ready, the roads will have modern, disabled-friendly bus stops, public conveniences and wide pavements. Road signages are being changed to conform to international standards and street furniture is to set new benchmarks. The NDMC is also planning modern kiosks to sell food, flowers and stationary.

The streetscaping will involve signboards pertaining to pedestrian crossings — directions like “give way”, and names of important buildings along with directions.

The bus queue shelters will have provisions for lighting and advertisements that would help recover the building cost.

Built on a build-operate-transfer basis, such shelters already stand at 197 spots in the NDMC areas.

The NDMC’s Horticulture Department will also chip in, planting shrubs and grasses on the sides of footpaths. Irrigation lines will be laid on both sides of roads ¿ with the water being sourced from borewells, pumps and rainwater storage tanks.

“While it is important to have beautiful roads near the CWG venues, it is also important that the roads connecting them to other areas should also get a makeover,” said an NDMC official.

    ... contd.

Use CG2010 to embark on a longer term plan to beautify /upgrade major Indian citiesBy: Haridas Nair | 05-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward It's gratifying to read about positive moves to upgrade the appearance of New Delhi. A very good start indeed, which one hopes would raise the stature of this great historical city. Please do not forget to improve various other aspects of the city's infrastucture and amenities as well as their sustained management,to place New Delhi amongst the better managed cities in the world.Yes indeed, this has to be only the start point , other Indian cities (at least the major ones ) must necessarily take pride in raising their stature and eminence, and to start off with the major state capitals.
still a thrid world cityBy: raj | 05-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward After the games are over, only those projects that are maintained or owned by private parties will stay in good shape. The ones owned or maintained by sarkari departments and karamcharis will deteriorate and slowly rot. Anyways New Delhi still is a third world city. World class cities do not have non airconditioned city buses, third class railway and bus stations, open stinking nalis and drains with swarms of mosquitos and flies, unplanned neighbourhoods and slums, streets without pedestrian pavements,or streets with broken and encroached pavements, stray animals, unreliable electricity and water supply, motorists who don't know and respect a single traffic rule. The new buses that D.T.C. is getting will soon have their signal and tail lights broken or missing and will have dented bodies because as i have said earlier the people don't know how to drive. They only know how to honk and tailgate. It will take another 50years for New Delhi to become a world class city. MAYBE MORE.

Beautifying Delhi for CommonwealthBy: C.Sasidharan | 05-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Why should we beautify Delhi only for Commonwealth Games? Does it not sound silly that the capital city of one of the biggest democratic countries should remain beautiful and receptive to all guests - even without games or a major national or international event. We can inculcate sense of discipline amongst the citizens and habitants of Delhi which will go a long way in keeping the city clean even after the Games 2010. C.Sasidharan, New Delhi
ENSURE PROPER QUALITYBy: J.Mahanty | 05-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward It is good to learn that a lot of money is being spent to refurbish the CP and adjoining Areas prior to the CW Games. However, the quality of materials and workmanship of such works leave a lot to be desired. It appears that there is NO proper Quality Assurance team on the Site to check the quality of material inputs and the workmanship, essential for the useful life of the renovation work. Unless due attention is paid on Quality, I am afraid, the renovated work may not last to even see the Games.
