Need to keep Pak engaged, says PC

He asserted that there is no ‘’dichotomy’’ in the government’s policy on Pakistan. “Pakistan is our neighbour

Islamabad’s failure to bring perpetrators of 26/11 Mumbai attacks to justice not withstanding,India,as a ‘’neighbour’’,has to keep Pakistan engaged, but without losing sight of its priorities,Home Minister P Chidambaram said on Thursday.

He asserted that there is no ‘’dichotomy’’ in the government’s policy on Pakistan. “Pakistan is our neighbour. There are issues. We have to keep Pakistan engaged and also stress on our priorities which is bringing 26/11 perpetrators to justice,” Chidambaram told reporters, adding that New Delhi would engage Pakistan “wherever we can” on issues like visas,fishermen,cross-border trade, and exchange of prisoners.

“Those are matters on which we are engaging Pakistan. I don’t think there is dichotomy or contradiction. This is the policy spelt out by the Prime Minister and I think this is the right policy,” the minister added.

These remarks came even as New Delhi is yet to see any action on the list of 50 fugitives it wants Pakistan to hand over.

“The government is pressing Pakistan,as well as mobilising international opinion,to bring the real perpetrators of 26/11 attacks to justice,” Chidambaram said.

He rejected Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik’s claim that Dawood Ibrahim was not in that country. “We think Dawood Ibrahim has a home in Karachi. Whether all the time he is in Karachi,I can’t say but we have seen that most part of the year he is in Karachi or at another place in Pakistan,” he said.

He also denied Malik’s claim that he had sent a message to the Pakistani minister after al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed. “There was no telephone conversation. He may have been misunderstood,” he said.
