The state government has decided to appeal against the sessions courts verdict in the Neeraj Grover murder case and seek life imprisonment for Kannada actress Maria Susairaj and her fiance Emile Jerome.
A senior home department official said the police had filed a case of murder against Susairaj and Jerome under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and the government was going to appeal against the verdict given last week.
Three years after Grover was killed and his body chopped into pieces,a Mumbai court absolved Susairaj and Jerome of murder, holding them guilty of lesser offences. Jerome was found guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment.
Susairaj was convicted only for destroying evidence as she helped Jerome chop and burn Grovers body. She was sent to three years in jail, but since she had already served more time than that as an undertrial, she was freed on Saturday. We have received a detailed report from the law and judiciary department. We will appeal against the verdict in a higher court, the official said.
Meanwhile, the cine wings of Shiv Sena and MNS have warned film producers and television channels against casting Susairaj.
Amey Khopkar, president of the Maharashtra Navnirman Chitrapat Karmachari Sanghatana, said: Susairaj has a criminal background and therefore we dont want to see her in films or television shows. Any filmmaker or production house that intends to offer her a role or show should be prepared to face our wrath, he said.
Shiv Sena-promoted Bharatiya Chitrapat Senas president Abhijit Panse slammed Bollywood director Ram Gopal Varma for wanting to cast Susairaj in his next film. Varma is a big director. But since his films are not doing well at the box office,he is doing such publicity stunts, he said and warned of carrying out Shiv Sena-style protests if any filmmaker casts her.(With PTI inputs)
