‘Neglect of knee or shoulder injury can result in early onset of arthritis’

  • With an objective to propagate the Negelin the field of orthopaedics in the northern region, the Indian Arthroscopy Society organised a regional workshop on “Basic arthroscopy” here on Sunday.

    Dr Harpreet S Gill, Senior Consultant and Head of Orthopaedics, SPS Apollo Hospital, who is the course coordinator, said this specialised field of orthopaedics was not only useful for treatment of injuries in sportsmen but also in general public. Arthroscopist can treat the knee and shoulder injuries without doing an open surgery, thus lessening the tissue trauma and hence early return to normal function. He delivered a lecture on shoulder injuries and the role of arthroscopy in their treatment.

    Dr IPS Oberoi, National Convener, Arthroscopy Learning Centre, New Delhi, said that such arthroscopy skill development courses were being held all over India and they helped the orthopaedic surgeons in upgrading their knowledge and skills. He said even in general public, the shoulder and knee ligament or soft tissue injuries should be tackled on similar lines as one is treating a sportsman. Neglect of these injuries can initiate early onset of arthritis, he warned. He gave a lecture on treatment of knee meniscus injuries.

    Dr VB Bhasin, Head of Arthroscopy unit at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, talked about the treatment of recurrent dislocations of the shoulder and knee ligament reconstruction.

    Dr Rajnish Garg, Associate Professor Orthopaedics, DMCH, Ludhiana, gave a lecture on knee anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Dr JL Bassi of Bassi Hospital chaired the scientific sessions.

    Around 50 orthopaedics surgeons from the region attended this basic arthrosocopy course. They upgraded their skills by performing arthrosocopy on bone models.
