Nihita would arrive the Central jail in Kathmandu on the dot regularly twice a week as the visiting hours began. And invariably, Sobhraj would give her the list of things he wanted. The prison department is aware that Nihita's mother has approved of her decision to marry Charles Sobhraj. “But all these are something that they should do after the supreme court delivers the judgment . We have no intention of getting into all this,” prison authorities say.
“She used to come regularly. We have now been told that they are already engaged and will soon be wed,” a central jail official said. But the girl has now been told not to come to the jail. “They were found indulging in obscene and indecent activities and the jail inmates as well as other visitors objected to that,” Sthaneshwar Devkota, Director General of Prison told The Indian Express. “I have no idea if this is true. I represent him in the murder case that he is being tried for,” said Basantram Bhandari, senior advocate.
Authorities are verifying Nihita’s past. “She came to me with an elderly lady who said she was a lawyer and social activist, and wanted no hindrance in her meeting with Sobhraj.” Nihita’s mother has apparently gone on record approving the ‘relationship’. “But the report we got from the jail were different. They might still meet, but indecent acts like kissing in the public gaze are not allowed. Nor do we have the practice of allowing an under trial to come out of the jail and marry,” a senior government official said. Nihita was not available for comment.
Sobhraj was arrested in Nepal about three years ago and is being tried for the murder of Connie Jo Bronzich, an American national , way back in 1975 in Kathmandu. The Supreme court has asked the government to produce evidences that he checked into two hotes — Hotel Soaltee and Hotel Malla — at the same time in 1975. “But no date has been fixed yet for the next hearing,” said Bhandary.
