The release of a huge amount of water from barrages in Nepal has flooded the prominent rivers of eastern Uttar Pradesh — Ghaghra and Saryu.

Recently, 2,33,000 cusecs of water was released from Girija, Sharda and Gopiya barrages at the Nepal border.

Water in Ghaghra has risen to 6 points above the danger level, submerging over 100 villages in Bahraich and Barabanki on Friday and inundating nearly two dozen low-lying villages in Faizabad.

Ghaghra’s water level has recorded a rapid rise in the last few days.

According to the Barabanki administration, nearly 50 villages have been affected by floods.

According to the report of Central Water Commission (CWC), the water level is rising at the pace of one point per hour. On Friday, the water level in Saryu in Ayodhya reached 92.79 m — 6 cm above the danger mark.

Assistant Engineer of CWC, SR Gupta, said at Aligen bridge in Bahraich, the water level is rising by one cm per hour, as the Ghaghra is flowing above the danger level. On Thursday, the water level was 106.236 m at Aligen bridge and 135.35 m at Kartaniyaghat, he added.

According to the reports, the Bahraich district is the worst off, where more than 100 villages in Jarwal, Fakharpur and Qaiserganj blocks have been submerged and two villages of Qaiserganj block have been fully inundated.

A resident of Mahsi Tehsil in Bahraich, Ballabh Yadav (40), was washed away.

The Bahraich DM, S C Sharma, said the administration is providing relief to the flood-affected areas, health teams are camping in these areas and motor boats have been arranged to relocate the villagers to safe places.
