Widening the scope of its investigations into irregularities involving defence PSU BEML Ltd,CBI has sought the defence ministrys sanction to begin a corruption probe against its chairman and MD V R S Natarajan.
CBI today questioned Ravi Rishi, chairman of the Vectra Group,in connection with BEMLs Rs 5,000 crore deal with Czech truckmaker Tatra, the company in which Vectra has a major stake.
Sources said Natarajan, who has headed BEML for nearly 10 years, has been accused of receiving favours from Vectra in a separate case, and allegedly indulging in corrupt practices. CBI has not revealed details of the charges as it continues to await the ministrys sanction.
The agency requires permission under Sec. 6A of Delhi Special Police Establishment Act to begin probing any official above the rank of joint secretary. It is believed that the ministry, which is keen to clear the air,has in principle decided to allow the CBI inquiry.
Sources said CBI is also likely to seek a clarification from Natarajan on the technical classification set by BEML for the procurement of Tatra trucks from Vectra. Rishi, the sources said, named Natarajan and his team during his six-hour questioning on Monday.
Officials said Rishi was questioned on the source of supply of the trucks,as documents seized during raids allegedly reveal that Vectra is not the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
We have asked Rishi to provide more details. A lookout notice has been issued so that he does not leave India, a CBI officer said.
Natarajan did not respond to phone calls and SMSes. He had earlier slammed Army Chief Gen. V K Singh for his statement on the quality of the Tatra trucks, and described the bribery allegation as motivated.
